Two wooden houses in Lall Bazaar, Singtam were completely gutted in a fire outbreak on Tuesday night. Four electronic appliances shops functioning from the two structures were also consumed by the blaze.
Chief Minister P.S. Golay along with area MLA-cum-Health minister Dr. M.K. Sharma visited the spot Wednesday morning. They were accompanied by other ministers and officers from the departments concerned.
The Chief Minister met the house owners and extended ex-gratia to them from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and State Disaster Management Fund. Ex-gratia was also handed over to the four tenants who were running shops from the two houses.
Golay announced to build a one-storey house for each family. He also assured all possible support from the government to the shop owners.
During his visit, the Chief Minister asked the competent authorities to prepare a plan under Urban Housing Scheme to replace all the kutcha houses of the urban areas of Sikkim with single-storey building in a phased manner.He added that the government will also provide facility for those wanting to further extend it.
The Chief Minister directed the Urban Development department to come up with multi storied parking plaza near new Singtam bridge. He also inspected nearby Adarsh Gaon which annually face danger of a swelling Teesta river during the monsoon. He directed the Irrigation department to come up with project to stop river abetment in the area.
On his way back to Gangtok, the Chief Minister asked the concerned department to construct proper shed for the vegetables and corn vendors operatingalong the sides of NH 10 between Singtam and Ranipool.
